About

Maine Students for Climate Justice (MSCJ), is a student-run coalition dedicated to confronting the systems and institutions fueling the climate crisis. We bring youth voices to the climate struggle in Maine, and provide resources and support for one another as we work towards ecological sustainability and social justice. This coalition is made up of a number of different schools in Maine, which include: Bates College, Bowdoin College, Colby College, College of the Atlantic, Unity College, University of Maine - Orono, University of New England, and University of Southern Maine. See below for some of the good work many of these campuses are engaged in. Also find information on our coalition partner, 350 Maine.

Bowdoin Climate Action

We are Bowdoin students dedicated to climate justice by campaigning for fossil fuel divestment.

Because it is unconscionable to pay for our education with investments that will condemn the planet to climate disaster, we call on Bowdoin to immediately freeze any new investment in fossil-fuel companies, and to divest within five years from direct ownership and from any commingled funds that include fossil-fuel public equities and corporate bonds.

Divest UMaine

Maine communities, environment and future are threatened by rising global temperatures caused by the burning of fossil fuels. From rising sea levels destroying coastal towns to decreased levels of biodiversity in its beautiful forests, fossil fuels are directly threatening Maine's ability to sustain itself.

350 Maine

350 Maine is a grassroots movement dedicated to solving the planetary climate crisis. We grow our power collectively to find real and lasting solutions, to end our dependence on fossil fuels, and to build a healthy, sustainable life for people and the planet.

Fossil Free Bates

Bates cherished history and values speak for the need to divest. We are a school that was founded by abolitionists at a time in history when no one thought our country could run without slavery. Looking into Bates' mission statement as educating students for "stewardship of the wider world" and described as “a school for coming times,” it is only logical to think that Bates would take a strong stand on the most pertinent issue of the time — the move toward sustainability and environmental responsibility.
